The 2021 Construction and Fire Codes adoption has been extended and will go into effect on March 15, 2024. All permit applications submitted after March 15, 2024 must comply with the 2021 codes; complete applications received on or before March 14th will be vested to the 2018 codes.

Development within the City of Kirkland can involve three major departments: Planning and BuildingPublic Works, and Fire.  Specialized workgroups from each of these departments are collectively referred to as Development Services. Each group has their own role in assisting you with your development goals and needs.

The City of Kirkland has launched an online mapping tool that allows users to learn about building permits, land use actions, and code enforcement throughout the city. The Kirkland Activity Map is now available and allows users to view what is happening around a selected location, share a filtered view of the map, or set up customized email alerts.
